When I started raising sheep, I was drawn to Navajo Churro & Icelandic's for their triple purpose usage. They are both great breeds for meat, dairy, fibre, and were the perfect breeds for our Alberta climate and what I was looking for in sheep. I always knew I wanted to dive into the dairy side of things with the flock from the time I got them, but I never jumped at it until the summer of 2022.

Magenta, one of my Navajo Churro ewes had just weaned her lamb and was still super full of milk. So, I gave her a bucket of grain, got a jar, and set out on this new adventure. After milking for a few weeks, I had an abundance of milk from her so went the path of freezing it so I was able to have more opportunities in a few more months. I was able to make a few batches of soap from her milk that following winter, and fell in love. It has now been almost two years since I dove into the dairy side of things, and here we are. I've been able to milk Magenta her last few lambings, and plan to continue doing so for as long as she'll let me, as well as milk more of my ewes and hopefully do some lamb share this spring!
